The course in 90 seconds

Delgany Golf Club holds a genuinely rare distinction in Irish golf: it was designed by Harry Vardon, the Jersey-born golfer who won The Open Championship six times between 1896 and 1914 — a record that still stands. Vardon was also instrumental in popularising the overlapping grip that now bears his name and that most golfers use today. To play Delgany is to play a course shaped by one of the founding figures of the modern game.

The course occupies dense mature woodland in the village of Delgany in north Wicklow, and the trees are as much a design feature as the fairways themselves. At par 68 and approximately 5,600 yards — with an outward half of 2,815 yards and inward of 2,785 — Delgany is not a long course, but that is precisely the point. Vardon understood that woodland golf rewards accuracy and precision over power, and that principle runs through every hole here. You can hit driver on the wider holes, but you will need every iron in your bag before the round is done.

Green fees from €35 weekday and €45 at weekends make Delgany one of the best-value courses in north Wicklow, and the club's reputation for friendliness is well-earned. It is frequently cited by visiting golfers as one of the warmest welcomes in the county.

Harry Vardon — the designer

Harry Vardon (1870–1937) won The Open Championship six times: 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914. He also won the US Open in 1900. His six Open titles remain an all-time record. Beyond his playing record, Vardon popularised the overlapping grip (now universally known as the Vardon grip) and was one of the key figures in the Americanisation of golf through his 1900 US tour. He designed and remodelled several courses during his career, and Delgany is one of the surviving examples of his design work in Ireland.

Frequently asked

Is Delgany really designed by Harry Vardon?

Yes — Delgany Golf Club's layout is attributed to Harry Vardon, six-time Open Champion. Vardon designed and remodelled several courses during his career, and Delgany is one of the surviving examples of his work in Ireland. Playing here is a genuine connection to one of golf's great historical figures.

Do I need a handicap to play Delgany?

No — visitors are welcome throughout the week without a handicap certificate. Advance booking is recommended; contact the club on +353 1 287 4536 or book via delganygolfclub.com.

Is Delgany good value?

Delgany is one of the best-value courses in north Wicklow — from €35 weekday and €45 at weekends for a Vardon-designed course with mature woodland character. For the combination of historical pedigree, course quality and green fee, it compares very well against nearby alternatives.

What is the par at Delgany?

Par 68 — reflecting the woodland character of the course, where precision and accuracy are prioritised over length. At approximately 5,600 yards from the standard tees, the course may look modest on paper, but the tight tree-lined fairways and the Vardon routing ensure a genuine golfing challenge throughout.

What is Delgany village like?

Delgany is a quiet, attractive village in north Wicklow — the kind of place with a good pub, a handful of local businesses, and a strong community feel. It is a short drive from both Greystones and the N11, making it easy to combine a round at Delgany with a visit to nearby restaurants in Greystones town (The Hungry Monk, Chakra by Jaipur) or a walk along the coast.
