At par 68 and approximately 5,600 yards — with an outward half of 2,815 yards and inward of 2,785 — Delgany is not a long course, but that is precisely the point. Harry Vardon (1870–1937) won The Open Championship six times: 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914. He also won the US Open in 1900. His six Open titles remain an all-time record. Beyond his playing record, Vardon popularised the overlapping grip (now universally known as the Vardon grip) and was one of the key figures in the Americanisation of golf through his 1900 US tour. He designed and remodelled several courses during his career, and Delgany is one of the surviving examples of his design work in Ireland.
